What is ElevATP?

ElevATP® is a combination of ancient peat and apple polyphenols created by FutureCeuticals1. Specifically, ElevATP® is a mix of a water extract of humic shale (fossilized plants; think mineral abundance) and apple extract2. Sounds a bit odd, I know. Wait ’til you see the research.

ElevATP® won Ingredient of the Year in Sports Nutrition in 2018 at the NutraIngredients-USA Awards1.

ElevATP Benefits

In relation to exercise, ElevATP® provides:

  • Increased strength.
  • Increased endurance.
  • Increased power output.
  • Increased exercise capacity.

ElevATP’s Mechanism of Action — How Does it Work?

Remember our pals Adenosine Triphosphate and mitochondria from high school biology? ATP is the primary energy carrier for cells. As the name suggests, ElevATP’s mechanisms are primarily centered around ATP modulation and oxygen utilization2.

ElevATP® increases blood levels of ATP without a simultaneous increase in blood ROS (reactive oxygen species) or serum lactate. This is significant, as an increase in endogenous ATP is usually accompanied by an increase in intracellular free radicals. More importantly, ElevATP® seems to increase ATP in muscle tissue several-fold more than in blood2.

As an unexpected bonus, ElevATP® also seems to increase certain anti-inflammatory cytokines and decrease certain pro-inflammatory chemokines in vivo2.

As such, ElevATP® may be useful not only for gym-goers, but also for those undergoing rapid altitude change and those with adverse respiratory conditions.

About ElevATP’s Creators

ElevATP® was invented by Zbigniew Pietrzkowski, Ph.D., the VP of Research and Development at FutureCeuticals, Inc.2,3 FutureCeuticals, Inc. aims “to deliver the highest quality fruit, vegetable and grain-based solutions to our partners and make it easy for them to deliver on the consumer promise of healthy products.”4

ElevATP Studies

In a pilot study by Reyes-Izquierdo et al, 18 healthy participants were randomly assigned to either a placebo group or a treatment group to receive 150mg of ElevATP®. Blood samples were collected at 60, 90, and 120 minutes; these data points were pooled and averaged to compare groups. The group that received ElevATP® saw a blood ATP level increase of 45% on average, with no increase in ROS or blood glucose5.

In a follow-up study, Reyes-Izquierdo et al sought to confirm the results from the first study, to look at non-pooled effect of time on the treatment group, and to investigate ATP levels in muscle tissue. Researchers noted a 40% increase in whole blood ATP levels at 60 minutes, and a 28% increase at 120 minutes relative to baseline. Intramuscular ATP levels had increased significantly at both 60 and 120 minutes6.

A study from Joy et al published in 2015 looked at the effects of ElevATP® on body composition over 12 weeks of resistance training. Resistance training protocol consisted of 8 weeks of daily undulating periodized training, followed by a 2-week overreach phase, and then a 2-week taper phase. 25 healthy, resistance-trained males were divided into a placebo group and a treatment group taking 150mg of ElevATP® daily. The treatment group saw significant increases in both cross-sectional area (CSA) and muscle thickness, with no adverse effects on blood biomarkers. This suggests that ElevATP® may enhance muscle hypertrophy. These results are illustrated below. The researchers hypothesized that the pathway at play may be augmented blood flow from ElevATP® leading to more efficient and effective nutrient delivery to the muscles. There was no effect on body fat7.

Joy et al followed up in 2016 with 21 participants and included extended-release caffeine (180mg) supplementation alongside ElevATP®, yielding essentially the same results: increased CSA and muscle thickness, as illustrated below. This time, researchers noted a small decrease in body fat for the treatment group, which they attributed to the caffeine8.

Later in 2016, Reyes-Izquierdo et al sought to investigate the potential ergogenic effects of ElevATP® on 9 healthy individuals with a sedentary lifestyle. Participants were evaluated before, during, and after a 20-minute stepping exercise. Compared to placebo, participants who took ElevATP® completed a significantly greater number of steps and burned more calories, with no significant changes in blood lactate or blood glucose levels9. These results are illustrated below. The findings suggest ElevATP® may augment exercise performance in sedentary individuals.

My ElevATP Review

Attempting to supplement exogenous ATP is unreliable and potentially problematic10. ElevATP® supplementation allows for a seemingly “healthy,” easy, inexpensive, reliable method of significantly boosting endogenous ATP. We’re basically talking about a combination of minerals and fruit extract, and we know polyphenolic compounds have a range of health-promoting benefits11.

The results from the research are intriguing. We see potential ergogenic effects from ElevATP® on both trained and sedentary individuals, as well as a potential effect, albeit small, on fat metabolism. What is particularly interesting and promising is that we see the aforementioned ATP-augmenting effects in young individuals who are likely not experiencing the decline in ATP metabolism that accompanies aging.

ElevATP Safety

ElevATP® has attained GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) status from the FDA. It is safe for human consumption at normal dosages.

ElevATP Side Effects

To my knowledge, no side effects from ElevATP® have been reported. I do have a friend who is allergic to apple skin (possibly ursolic acid specfiically). If you have any fruit-related allergies, ElevATP® may not be a good idea.

ElevATP Dosage and Timing

The research has used an effective daily dose of 150mg, taken about an hour before exercise.

ElevATP Supplements

ElevATP® should work well alongside other ingredients like caffeine, creatine, PeakO2®, and Dynamine®. I’m a big fan of Jacked Factory. They use research-backed ingredients at clinically effective dosages. Their product Build XT contains PeakO2® and ElevATP®.

Dear John: Hope all is well. My thanks for your review. My primary interest is (a) locating all-organic supplements that are (b) made in America, and also have some legit clinical studies to match the company-generated claims. The “ElevATP” looks like a strong contender, but I can’t find any pricing via Amazon, or even one of the main manufacturers (“FutureCeuticals”). Anything else you’d care to share about this or a very, very similar product that meets my above ‘1-2-3 goalposts’? Many thanks for any and all suggestions. Hey Donald, glad you found it useful. Note that ElevATP is just an ingredient manufactured by FutureCeuticals that’s then included in supplement blends like the ones I mentioned from Jacked Factory. As far as I know there’s not a standalone ElevATP supplement. Mushrooms actually might fit your goalposts better if you’re interested in that.
